Contents

Photography

I mainly take photographs of these subject matters:

  • night photography
  • street scene
  • landscape
  • construction sites, abandoned sites
  • non-human animals
  • environmental portrait, portrait, fashion

My photographic interests include:

  • semantically competing or conflicting scenes
  • interactions of visual and text elements
  • study of composition, especially in negative space and geometric arrangement

I do not shoot weddings. I do not do events. I do not work for hire.

For the most part, I use wet-processed, black-and-white, silver-gelatin photography. Images are captured on film or dry plate and printed on photographic paper. Prints are toned with polysulfide and selenium to enhance the image's hue and permanence.

If you have any question in this area, or if you are in Boston area and wish to be on my exhibition mailing list (very low traffic), please write me at rs+photo at silvergrain.org.

Silvergrain Chemicals

I have been researching on science and technology of photography for more than a decade. Based on my needs from photographic activity, I designed many processing chemicals for photography, and some of them outgrew as commercial products. However, I am not involved in sales, marketing or distribution. The business agent for all Silvergrain products is Digitaltruth Photo, Ltd.. (That is, I don't even stock my products for sale.)

I do provide information for the users at Silvergrain Users Information site.

Photographic Chemistry

I make all of my processing chemicals, and some emulsions to make plates and paper. Some of many well-tested processing chemicals I devised in the past for my photographic productions are licensed for commercial manufacturing by other company. However, my role is limited to occasional licensing of the formulae and does not include customer support, sales or any other business. Please send product-related correspondence to the manufacturer or distributor.

Interests:

  • ascorbate-based developers of improved image quality and low toxicity
  • archival toning methods
  • silver-gelatin emulsion technology and emulsion making
  • coating techniques, surfactant chemistry
  • history of photography (as art), photographic technology (as applied science), and interaction thereof

If you have questions regarding photographic chemistry, feel free to send them to rs+chem at silvergrain.org.

About the 2D barcode

The two-dimensional barcode is called QR code. In Japan, this is very commonly used on web sites, products, business cards, etc. One can simply scan the barcode by capturing it with a cell phone camera. The barcode is decoded, and the information is automatically added to the address book.

Another type of similar 2D barcode, called semacode, has very similar capacity and has a potential to become popular in the US.
